Extra tickets for London Olympics 2012

No sooner had I ranted about the lack of Olympic tickets for Londoners here, then the Olympic committee chiefs suddenly announce they have freed up another 800K tickets (300K for the Olympics, 500K for the Paralympics). This has been achieved by re-prioritising space previously held for broadcasting and security so that genuine sports fans have a chance of watching the events live.

This brings the total number of available tickets for the London Olympics to 10 million.

How do I apply for Olympic tickets?

A quarter of the tickets are earmarked for the Olympic family (VIPs, Athletes families, Sponsors and media). The remaining tickets will be sold via an online ballot, however, don’t grab your credit card quite yet.

The events schedule is still to be finalised and the ticket organisers will assess demand by sport/event. Genuine sports fans are advised to register interest in advance at www.tickets.london2012.com and to specify which sports they would like to watch. This method does not guarantee a ticket, but will help organisers to issue tickets more effectively and hopefully avoid the problems encountered in the last 2 Olympics where ticket sites crashed due to overwhelming demand.

The organisers Locog believe that this approach will lead to fairer allocation of tickets to fans, which it will keep posted in the buildup to the release of tickets with news via email, text or post.

Ticket prices and event information are expected to be available next spring. Note that if you wish to pay by credit card you can only use Visa otherwise you will have to pay by cash or cheque. Let’s hope they stick to their bid promise of trying to sell 4.3 million at £30 or less.

Good luck!
