Avatar at the BFI IMAX
I was fortunate enough to watch Avatar in 3D at the London IMAX recently.
If I had got my butt in gear I would have got tickets to see it a lot earlier, but I didn’t and consequently the all screenings sold out. Fortunately BFI extended the release schedule and I was able to secure some tickets.
Review of Avatar in 3D at the IMAX
I have to stay it was absolutely fantastic. Ok the story was a little predictable, but it was fun and enjoyable and visually stunning!
For those who don’t know, the 500 seater BFI IMAX screen near London Waterloo station and London’s Southbank is the UK’s biggest cinema screen. It measures 20 metres high, which they boast is equivalent to 5 double decker buses and it also features a fantastic sound system to really help you immerse yourself in the film.
So is Avatar worth watching in 3D?
Yes definitely, despite the slightly oversized 3D glasses they lend you for the performance (watch out for smudge marks!) the 3D looks fantastic, I saw Beowolf on the same screen and think that Avatar topped it. Watch out, it’s so realistic you find yourself tempted to reach out and try and touch the screen!
Overall I would recommend that everyone tries to see this film at the IMAX, I could have seen this for free at a Cineworld Cinema with my unlimited cinema pass, but actually really wanted to see it on the BIG SCREEN.
Getting to the London BFI IMAC cinema
The London IMAX cinema is located between London Waterloo train and tube stations and London’s Southbank. You could also get to the cinema by taking the tube to Embankment and head south, crossing Hungerford bridge. The cinema is well signposted for visitors.
For price and availability check the BFI official website here. Alice In Wonderland has just been released you might also want to catch this in 3D at the IMAX.

Avatar at the Oscars
I had really high hopes for this film. So did everyone else, as it did get nominated for 9 Oscars at this years (82nd) Annual Academy Awards.
Unfortunately, it appears that The Hurt Locker was the star on the night, winning ‘Best Picture’ amongst others. I have nothing against this film, but I consider it to be quite ordinary when compared to the achievement of Avatar.
Bias against James Cameron and his previous success perhaps?
Although to be honest, when you look at the list of winners this year it makes you think it wasn’t a great year for film anyway (just my 2 cents worth!)
